This isn’t a quiz, because I don’t know. It’s mounted on the wall backstage, and it plugs into the main power supply as shown in the next photo, with very specific instructions. Not your living room extension cord. The box also has a sticker saying only certified people can use it, probably because it could kill you.

Is this the box that makes it go to eleven?

Very possibly.

Could be a load balancer or a device for removing signal interference

Thats my guess.

Pretty sure that’s a 48VDC power distribution box.

I’m guessing that 48VDC is a lot of juice?

Not necessarily, but this box is definitely carrying a shitload of juice. Those breakers are at least 50A units, possibly 100A.
Amusingly, the pro audio inverters were often cheaper than the telecom ones, so I used to have a pile of them on my desk.

Well, I don’t really know an amp from a volt from a watt, so I’ll take your word for it. I need to get an electricity for dummies book so I can have at least a basic understanding.

Volts times Amps = Watts. So, assuming it’s 100A total, that’s 4800W.
So yeah, that’s a pretty decent amount of power. And definitely more than enough to kill you.

Aquick search on the internet makes it seem like it is probably a hoist motor controller/distribution system. This one looks similar though with more power and a different socket type:

Doesn’t look like they make them in quite that style anymore, but I think this would be the current equivalent: https://www.motionlabs.com/products/fixed-speed-control-systems-low-voltage-control-5/

Looks like you nailed it. I can’t find a controller, but this associated gear is next to it.

Amp = how much
Volt = how big
Watt = how much * how big

Clearly powered from a bigly 3-phase AC source. Do winches and lifts commonly run off DC these days?

Do winches and lifts commonly run off DC these days?
I hope you’re not asking me. I have no idea.

It has Cannon plugs and it’s in a box with twist-lock catches on the side... It sure looks like any of the myriad aircraft systems test sets I’ve seen over the years. Pretty sure those wouldn’t be mounted to a wall behind a stage, though, so it’s probably something else entirely.
